NESCOR HAS A CERTIFIED BUILDING ENVELOPE SPECIALIST ON STAFF - THIS SETS US APART FROM A TRADITIONAL HOME IMPROVEMENT COMPANY
Start off by understanding your home!
Every home has inside of it a defined space that needs to be heated and cooled. The top of that "Heating and Cooling Envelope" is your roof and attic space. 92% of homes in the U.S. are under-insulated in the Attic area, and most lack proper ventilation. The department of energy recommends an R-48 to R60 in the attic area to help keep heat from escaping in the wintertime, and solar heat gain in the summertime.
Other smaller holes exist in the attic around plumbing vents, attic hatches, recessed lighting, etc.. that should be sealed up as well. Proper ventilation such as soffit and ridge vent system work to prevent ice damning that could moisten the insulation greatly reducing R-value. When it is time to replace the roof shingles, reflectives shingles such as "Solaris" are now available on the market to reduce solar heat gain. The sides of the Heating and Cooling envelope are made up of your Outside insulated walls, windows and doors. Each should be checked for air leakage and insulating value. The Bottom of the envelope is your basement area. If you have a walk out basement than walls, doors and windows must be checked there as well. Air leakage should be checked around the sill plate and any pipes that may lead outside or up through the flooring.
The best place to start is a HOME ENERGY AUDIT.
During the audit we will help you to:
- Define your heating and cooling envelope
- Identify large and small air leakage points in attic, walls and basement
- Identify radiant heat losses and gains in attic, walls, and basement
- Identify moisture issues
- Analyze your lighting needs
- Analyze your appliances
- Explain tax credits available for efficiency upgrades
